But in 1979, his home country of Afghanistan fell apart when the Soviet Union invaded. Amidst the new reality of life in a violent war zone, Jay's family made the difficult decision to escape. In 1983, when Jay was just two and a half years old, they fled Kabul, seeking refuge in Pakistan and then Germany before ultimately arriving in California. pIn this new land of opportunity, they began to
