The notes from the State Library tell us that this image is "Looking across intersection of Collins and Russell streets towards four storey classical style building with corner tower at roof and flag pole

Hoffman and is a composite of a number of engravings and lithographs of Melbourne [Port Phillip] especially those by John Adamson

shows the dredge "Griper" going about its work of clearing the build up of silt and soil from the Yarra River

The astonishing architecture in this part of Melbourne was not deemed worthy of retaining for later generations
