The box is crossbanded with tulipwood with geometric borders to the front and top. Both the top and escutcheon are inset with mother of pearl surrounded by further geometric inlay in diamond form. The box opens to reveal a mustard leather writing surface with gilt stamped foliate decoration and a greek key border. The surface lifts at each end revealing
